Prague, the Golden City

The people of Prague proudly call their city the “Golden City”. In the evening, the city’s sandstone towers, of which there are more than 100, turn golden in the light of the setting sun and immerse the historic city on the river Vltava in a fantastic light. And some of the towers really are gold-plated, such as that of Prague Castle. The largest fortified castle complex in the world dates from the 9th century and is the symbol of the city together with the Royal Palace, the Golden Lane, the St. George’s Basilica and the St. Vitus Cathedral. While the castle was once home to kings and emperors, it is now the official residence of the Czech president.

Getting up early is worthwhile

You should visit the Charles Bridge before breakfast. The 500-metres long stone bridge dates from the 14th century, and connects the Old Town (Staré Město) with the Lesser Town (Malá Strana). The artists, musicians and street vendors on the bridge ensure that the atmosphere there is lively from morning until evening. A great place to catch up on your breakfast is the Old Town Square. We recommend the Grand Café Orient. When you’re ready to face the day, go and see the Town Hall, the astronomical clock and the Jan Hus memorial, take in a concert at St. Nicholas Church or go shopping in the magnificent Pařížská, the “street of Paris”.

A great selection of beers and hearty cuisine

Prague lives for and loves its beer culture. The city is home to many traditional breweries, such as the abbey brewery Strahov, the oldest Czech brewery Břevnov or U Medvídků. This brewery, which is home to the city’s oldest restaurant, is popular with both local residents and visitors because of its excellent Czech cuisine. Try out the roast pork with dumplings and red cabbage, Vepřo knedlo zelo. If you’re a fan of craft beer, it is worth visiting the Craft House in the New Town, with its selection of stouts, double IPAs and quadruples from all over the world.
